Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni took center stage at Star Wars Celebration today to talk about their new, live-action Star Wars series, The Mandalorian. Disappointingly, Lucasfilm took an approach with the panel opposite to that which the studio took with Star Wars Episode IX. Whereas everyone finally got to see teaser footage for The Rise of Skywalker, only those in attendance at Celebration got to see anything related to The Mandalorian. Notwithstanding, what official information and photos the general public did get paint quite the picture for the first live-action series in Star Wars franchise history. Focusing on a “lone gunslinger” adventuring his way through the Outer Rim, The Mandalarian is definitely going to have a gritty, space western kind of feel.
The Mandalorian to be a Gritty Frontier Adventure
Judging by the official photos the studio released after today’s panel, Favreau and Filoni have more that succeed at their goal. The pictures certainly five off old-school western and samurai film vibes. The characters looked hardened, living in a post-Return of the Jedi world. Law and order had forgotten the Outer Rim even during the Empire’s reign. Now, five years after its fall, it’s the crime syndicates and bounty hunters that rule the outer reaches. We’ll get to see that first hand when the show debuts on Disney+.
Pedro Pascal’s Mandalorian armor looks worn and lived-in, as does Gina Carano’s ensemble. Her character, like The Mandalorian, is a loner in the Outer Rim just trying to survive. How these two loners will interact remains to be seen.
Carl Weathers looks like his character will lean more towards the Ronin or samurai look, with long gloves and some kind of flowing, leather robes or cape. We long ago reported that Tatooine is a likely setting for the show. If that’s the case, then the sandy color palate and scenery in the official photos definitely fits.
Hopefully Favreau and company will ditch the now-pointless secrecy and release the official trailer soon. Until then, at least we finally have some more imagery to enjoy.
