The Last Drive-In With Joe Bob Briggs is back in full swing and with the third episode of Season 4; and with Week 3 Joe Bob and Darcy decided to tackle Friday The 13th, no, not the movies, but the superstition; and with us just finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel regarding COVID-19, they tackled isolation as well.
If you’ve never heard of Joe Bob Briggs or The Last Drive-In, every week during the course of their season, Joe Bob Briggs hosts a double-feature of movies. They can be horror classics, cult favorites, or buried treasures. Either way, they show the movie with insightful commentary by Joe Bob and Darcy The Mail Girl, often with special guests.
The movies they choose are a secret until the time of airing. I guessed what two movies they would show and I got neither of them right! The two movies shown were The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane and Housebound.
The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane (1976) D. Nicolas Gessner, W. Laird Koenig – The Last Drive-In With Joe Bob Briggs
Despite not showing any Friday The 13th movies (Darcy did say maybe next year!) the movies shown were still pretty great.
The first was The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane and starred a young Jodie Foster and a young Martin Sheen. Joe Bob teased that the final shot of the movie would be something and it was! It doesn’t hurt that there was a solid mystery and some thrills throughout.
During the breaks, Joe Bob talked about the movie and various superstitions. I did find the superstitions to be a bit dull. I know guests aren’t always an option but a guest would’ve been nice to break up the monotony of the various superstitions.
Housebound (2014) D. Gerard Johnstone, W. Gerard Johnstone – The Last Drive-In With Joe Bob Briggs
The second movie was a more recent movie, and a New Zealand horror movie to boot!
Housebound was a lot of fun, as mentioned, it balances horror and comedy well and doesn’t feel too one-sided either way.
Some great performances, and like in the previous film, there was a solid mystery throughout.
Also in parallel with the previous film, I felt as if the breaks got a bit dry without a guest or anything else super engaging. It was still entertaining, but after a while, it felt like there wasn’t much new to what they were talking about.
Conclusion
The movies themselves were fun, probably stronger than last week in my opinion. Sadly though the breaks didn’t entertain nearly as much as they could’ve. I needed something with a bit more energy. Doesn’t have to be a guest, although that tends to be the easiest, I needed a bit more energy and oomph to the proceedings.
Still, for two fantastic movies that are most likely flying under your radar, they are certainly worth checking out.
