Two-time BAFTA winner Jodie Comer has lined up her next feature film role. The actress will lead the thriller The End We Start From.

Described as a feminist survival story, The End We Start From sees London submerged by flood waters during an environmental crisis. Comer will play a mother who with her new-born child tries to find a way home, navigating the most challenging and apocalyptic start to motherhood. The film adapts the critically acclaimed novel by Megan Hunter.

Adapting the book for screen is Alice Birch, known for her work as a writer on HBO’s hit Succession. BAFTA winner Mahalia Belo (The Long Song) will direct. Given the success of the source material, the creative team, and Comer’s attachment, the film will no doubt be a hot package on the Cannes market later this month.

Anton and BBC Film will co-finance the feature. Executive producers include Anton’s Sébastien Raybaud and Cecile Gaget, BBC Film’s Eva Yates, Benedict Cumberbatch (under SunnyMarch), and Comer herself.

In a joint statement, producers Leah Clarke, Liza Marshall and Adam Ackland stated, “The End We Start From is very close to our hearts. Megan’s heart-wrenching novel, and Alice’s wonderful adaptation, present a story about motherhood, separation, social and environmental upheaval, and those primal instincts in us which draw moments of joy and inspiration out of the chaos. We are incredibly excited to have Mahalia and Jodie lead this talented creative team in making what we know will be a resonant, riveting film.“

Comer recently completed the final season of hit series Killing Eve, for which she won an Emmy Award in 2019. Just last night, she landed her second BAFTA for her role in the film Help. Comer is currently performing a critically-acclaimed one-woman show in London’s West End, Prima Facie.

Production on The End We Start From will begin in August.
