From space smuggler to adventuring archaeologist to… blue collar shrink? Harrison Ford just landed a new role in Apple TV’s Shrinking.
The actor will star opposite Jason Segel in the comedy series. The show follows Jimmy (Segel), a grieving therapist who starts to break the rules and tell his clients exactly what he thinks. Ignoring his training and ethics, he finds himself making huge, tumultuous changes to people’s lives, including his own.
According to Variety, Ford will play Dr. Phil Rhodes. The series describes Dr. Rhodes as a “down-to-earth, sharp-as-a-tack blue collar shrink.” A pioneer in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Ford’s character built a successful practice over the years that he shares with his two young proteges, Jimmy and Gaby. Dr. Rhodes has also recently been diagnosed with Parkinson’s, creating new challenges to his fierce independence and pushing him out of his comfort zone while grappling with intrusive friends and estranged family.
Segel will write Shrinking alongside co-creator Bill Lawrence. Ted Lasso star, writer, and EP Brett Goldstein also writes.
Interestingly, despite his long-running career, Shrinking marks Ford’s first-ever television starring role. Of course, he’s had an incredibly successful film career, leading franchises like Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and Blade Runner, as well as features like The Fugitive and Witness.
Apple TV first announced Shrinking back in October 2021. The series received the green light for 10 episodes. Apple has not revealed a release date, but check back to THS for more updates.
