HBO Max tapped two powerhouse stars to lead its latest thrilling true crime story. The Staircase stars Colin Firth and Toni Collette, and explores the life of Michael Peterson and the mysterious death of his wife, Kathleen.
Check out the first teaser for the series below.
If this case seems vaguely familiar to you… you’re right. If you love true crime media, you may have watched something about the Peterson case before. Way back in 2004, the events of the Peterson investigation were documented in a French TV miniseries; an abbreviated version was subsequently broadcast on American TV. More recently in 2018, Netflix debuted The Staircase while adding three new episodes to explore the Peterson case and trial. (Oh, and the first season of NBC comedy Trial & Error also spoofed the case.)
The HBO Max dramatization of the true story comes from creator Antonio Campos. Campos serves as showrunner, writer, and executive producer alongside Maggie Cohn. The eight-episode limited series includes six episodes directed by Campos and two directed by Leigh Janiak.
In addition to Firth and Collette, the series also stars Michael Stuhlbarg, Juliette Binoche, Dane DeHaan, Olivia DeJonge, Rosemarie DeWitt, Tim Guinee, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Sophie Turner, Vincent Vermignon, Odessa Young, and Parker Posey.
The Staircase will premiere Thursday, May 5 on HBO Max with three episodes. The rest of the limited series will drop weekly episodes until the finale June 9.
