Today, CD Projekt Red confirmed that a sequel to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is in development. The previous game sold incredibly well and won over 250 Game of the Year awards across the industry. Now, in addition to that news, they also announced that they’ll be working with Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 5 for the game. The teaser image above shows off a medallion with the phrase “A New Saga Begins”. Those are the only details we have for what the new game could be about. Either way, it’s exciting to see confirmation that a new game is coming.

Why The Unreal Engine 5?

The change to the Unreal Engine is a big one for CD Projekt Red because they’ve used their own proprietary engine, REDengine for the games in the series since The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings. It’s a new partnership that should strengthen the Unreal Engine for not just CD Projekt Red games, but other open-world games in the future on the engine. CTO of CD Projekt Red, Pawel Zawodny had this to say about the partnership.

One of the core aspects of our internal RED 2.0 Transformation is a much stronger focus on technology, and our cooperation with Epic Games is based on this principle. From the outset, we did not consider a typical licensing arrangement; both we and Epic see this as a long-term, fulfilling tech partnership. It is vital for CD PROJEKT RED to have the technical direction of our next game decided from the earliest possible phase as; in the past, we spent a lot of resources and energy to evolve and adapt REDengine with every subsequent game release. This cooperation is so exciting, because it will elevate development predictability and efficiency, while simultaneously granting us access to cutting-edge game development tools. I can’t wait for the great games we’re going to create using Unreal Engine 5!

The next game in The Witcher saga doesn’t have a development window or release date yet, but we’ll keep you updated on the story as it develops.
