Captain Marvel is blasting into theaters this March and will introduce one of Marvel Comic’s most powerful and popular superheroes. Brie Larson plays Captain Marvel and leads an all-star cast including Samuel L. Jackson, Lashana Lynch, Ben Mendelsohn, Clark Gregg, Gemma Chan, and Jude Law.  Both Jackson and Gregg had the opportunity to play younger versions of themselves in Captain Marvel, which takes place in 1995.

NICK FURY, AGENT OF SHIELD

Samuel L. Jackson reprises his role of Nick Fury in Captain Marvel, but as a younger more inexperienced agent of SHIELD.  Long time Marvel film alumnus Clark Gregg also returns as a younger Phil Coulson. At a press conference in Los Angeles, Jackson explained the difference between his character’s portrayal in Captain Marvel versus previous movies. “Oh, you know, sort of a kinder, gentler, not so cynical world-weary, chip-on-the-shoulder Nick Fury,” Jackson said. “Who hadn’t met anyone from another universe just yet. And sort of looking at the crazy lady trying to figure out why she thinks she’s an alien [LAUGHTER] and what all that means. It’s kind of fun to not be the all-knowing, angry, persuader that Nick Fury always is. And, you know, even more refreshing to have two eyes, so I don’t have to cover one eye while I was learning my lines [LAUGHTER].”

“IT KIND OF FELT LIKE I WAS IN WAKANDA”

When asked about the Captain Marvel’s de-aging process, Jackson explained, “There’s not a real on-set process.” He continued, “No, more like, you know, they put the wig on me and they put dots my face [LAUGHTER], so it kind of felt like I was in Wakanda. And they started exploring, you know, different things that I had done before so that they could use facial expressions that were already there.  Fortunately for me I’d done like three movies before this one [LAUGHTER]. So, they had stuff to refer to, so, it was cool.  It was just me and dots on my face [LAUGHTER] and having fun with Brie.”  Jackson previously worked with Brie Larson on Kong: Skull Island and Unicorn Store, which Larson directed, before reuniting in Captain Marvel.

“THE TWO HUMAN BEINGS ON EARTH WHO DON’T NEED IT”

Captain Marvel’s producer Kevin Feige added, “Well, the technology is spectacular and we’ve done it in a number of films and I think this represents the peak.  However, the two people up here who we, who we did do it to, Sam Jackson and Clark Gregg, are the two human beings on earth who don’t need it.” He continued, “I urge you to Google them in 1995 [LAUGHTER] and it’s almost identical. So, we saved a lot of money; let’s put it that way. [LAUGHTER].”
