According to an exclusive report from THR, James Gunn is currently in talks to direct The Suicide Squad – set to be a soft reboot of 2016 film that will premiere in August 2021. While this news may not surprise many given that the Guardians of the Galaxy director was already confirming to be writing the screenplay, it does mean that David Ayer returning to helm the movie is off the table.
But the previous director put to rest any talk of hard feelings between Ayer and Warner Bros. with his reaction to the screen test Birds of Prey teaser, starring Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn.
The upcoming 2020 release of Birds of Prey, which was penned by Christina Hodson (Bumblebee) and is being directed by Cathy Yan (Dead Pigs), received Ayer’s full support via twitter. Or at the very least, his previous DCEU film’s leading lady did. There’s been plenty of talk about what it means to attach Harley Quinn to the story, but it looks like David Ayer is all about The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn.
Seeing as the director certainly had a hand in creating the current incarnation of the character, it makes sense that he would be a “proud dad” when it comes to her spreading her wings and appearing in other movies. And while we don’t know how her character will shift in new hands, the work done by Robbie and Ayer in her last appearance will form the foundation for Harley Quinn’s big screen presence going forward.
