It has been recently announced by Activision that they will be splitting with Bungie. This means that Bungie will receive full development/ownership rights over the Destiny franchise.
Activision released this statement earlier on today:
Destiny, as a franchise has been a bit of a mixed bag since it’s initial release in 2014. While the games were mostly well received thanks to their stunning graphics and solid gun gameplay, the common complaint with Destiny and it’s sequel was it’s lack of content.
However it appears as if those complaints could finally be rectified thanks to the split of Activision and Bungie.
The blame for the lack of content usually fell on the shoulders of Activision as many felt that they were forcing Bungie to remove levels, missions and areas from the final game so that they could be released in the form of DLC later on. If this was never Bungie‘s intention, it could mean we could see their real intention come through.
With Destiny 3 seeming inevitable at this point, it will be very interesting to see what Bungie will be able to deliver with this franchise now that they have full ownership over the games and their future.
Alternatively, they could go in a completely fresh direction and create a completely new IP which is something that many fans would be eager to see given the fact that these are the same guys who developed the early Halo games.
