TORCHWOOD
One of Torchwood’s most interesting guest characters was Captain John Hart, played by James Marsters. He was a former time agent and partner to Jack Harkness. This fan favorite returns in a new audio adventure from Big Finish Productions in association with BBC Studios.
CAPTAIN JOHN HART
Hart first appeared in the Torchwood episode “Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang,” where he tricks the team into helping him find a hidden treasure. Jack is wary of his former lover and Time Agency partner but falls back into old habits and is duped by Hart.
James Marsters first gained attention as Spike the vampire on the television show Buffy the Vampire Slayer. After Buffy, he became a regular on the Buffy spin-off Angel and then went on to guest star on such shows as Andromeda, Smallville, and Caprica. His most recent role is genius scientist Victor Stein on Hulu’s Runaways, based on the Marvel comic of the same name.
THE SINS OF CAPTAIN JOHN
Marsters will reprise his role of Hart in the four-story box set Torchwood: The Sins of Captain John. In these stories the anti-hero rogue time agent will be thriving in Restoration London, exploring gas planets, playing ‘Stepford wife’ and kissing (then killing) countless victims. Torchwood fans can expect to finally get some answers left hanging from the beginning of the television show.
Marsters previously voiced the role of Captain John in the Big Finish audio adventure The Death of Captain Jack, alongside Torchwood alumni John Barrowman, Eve Myles, Gareth David-Lloyd, and Kai Owen. “Doing The Death of Captain Jack was incredible,” Marsters said (via Big Finish). “I have missed doing Torchwood so much. Beyond being proud of playing a part in it, the character itself is a blast to play, and those two episodes just weren’t enough.”
THE DETAILS
Torchwood: The Sins of Captain John is scheduled to release in January 2020. The four stories are “The Restored,” “Escape from Nebazz,” “Peach Blossom Heights,” and “Darker Purposes,” all written by David Llewellyn. “Writing The Death of Captain Jack was a total blast, and both James Goss (producer of the Torchwood range) and I realized we could have a lot more fun with Captain John Hart, providing James Marsters was happy to return,” said Llewellyn (via Big Finish).
“Captain John is this chaotic, disruptive, insubordinate force of nature; completely amoral and unpredictable, so that gave me a lot of freedom! Writing is often a case of knowing when to hold back, when to tread a more subtle line, but with Captain John it’s the complete opposite. And setting it before Torchwood on television meant we were able to go to places where Torchwood can’t.”
The Sins of Captain John is available for pre-order on BigFinish.com at £28 on CD or £25 on download. The release price will be £35 on CD and £30 on download.
