The Fox TV series Firefly was cancelled in 2002 just months after it premiered, but writer and producer Joss Whedon’s saga of misbehavin’ space cowboys has continued to live in the hearts of its passionate, brown-coated fanbase. Various media spin-offs have continued to bring to fans the adventures of Mal Reynolds and crew, like the 2005 big-screen adaptation of the show, Serenity, which tied up most of the major plot threads of the truncated series. Dark Horse Comics has also kept the show flyin’, expanding on the backstories and side adventures of the crew in a collection of limited series, with writers such as Whedon himself, his brother and collaborator Zack Whedon, Jim Krueger, Brett Matthews, Patton Oswalt, and other creators. Titan Books is also gearing up to release a trio of novels set during the run of the series; the first, Big Damn Heroes, hits stores on November 20th.
Now, a new monthly title by Boom! Studios is set to dive into the “secret history” of Mal and Zoe and the horrors of the Unification War that have haunted them throughout the series. The series is penned by Greg Pak (Planet Hulk, Totally Awesome Hulk) and features art from Dan McDaid (Judge Dredd: Mega-City Zero) and it begins as you’d expect of a Firefly tale, with the crew facing fiery destruction from an impending crash. Assuming they survive THAT predicament, the series promises to show the moment that Mal and Zoe first met, reveal the Traitor of Serenity Valley, and explore the “real truth about the War of Unification.” Check out the synopsis below and pick up Firefly #1 from Boom! Comics, on sale now!
From Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Avengers) comes a new era of Firefly, as the definitive story of the Unification War is told at last!
Captain Malcolm Reynolds thought he could outrun his past, but when a simple heist goes wrong, he’s forced to confront it. With the fabled Traitor of Serenity Valley in his sights, Mal’s quest for revenge will put him at odds with his own crew, forcing him to make a choice: fix the past or fight for the future.
Along with Whedon, writer Greg Pak (Mech Cadet Yu, Totally Awesome Hulk, Weapon X) and artist Dan McDaid (Judge Dredd: Mega City Zero) take you back to the battleground where it all began…and reveal a secret history that might end it all.
