This week I got to talk with my favorite Star Wars comic cover artist John Tyler Christopher (JTC). This interview was special because of what his work means to me. So, if you are a comic/action figure/variant art fan of Star Wars and Marvel, this is a must read for you.
How It Started
As a kid growing up in Lafayette, Indiana, John Tyler Christopher already knew what he wanted to do when he grew up, and that was to draw:
“I don’t remember a time in my life when I didn’t want to be an artist…. My first movie I remember seeing was the Return of the Jedi. So, art and Star Wars honestly kind of go hand a hand for me my whole life.”
He quickly added comic books to his list of loves, an obsession that also began early on:
“The obsession with comics came when I got into middle school. Me and a group of my friends filled the vending machines for the school, that was our job during home room. While we were working I remember them telling me about the Death of Superman and I was like… what? …[{I]t took off from there. X-Men and all the Marvel and DC nineties books I really got into. I then fell in love with comics.”
