Meet your new Material Girl! Evan Rachel Wood is set to play Madonna in the upcoming Weird Al Yankovic biopic.
The Roku film will explore the life of parody music master Weird Al (played by Daniel Radcliffe).
Yankovic famously does not accept submissions or requests when developing his iconic song parodies. However, the one exception to this rule seemed to be Madonna. The pop star once joked with a friend that her hit “Like A Virgin” was destined to become a Weird Al song, “Like A Surgeon.” Yankovic discovered this through a mutual connection, and then did wind up creating “Like A Surgeon.”
Roku revealed a first look at Wood as Madonna on Instagram. “First look 🌟 Evan Rachel Wood is joining Daniel Radcliffe in #WEIRD: The Al Yankovic Story as the one and only Madonna!” reads the caption.
In addition to Wood as Madonna, expect to see Rainn Wilson as Dr. Demento, the California radio host who helped launch Yankovic’s stardom. At this time, it’s unclear if we can expect any other celebrities involved in Yankovic’s life and rise to fame to appear. However, he’s parodied plenty of people over the years, so it’s definitely a possibility.
Weird: The Al Yankovic Story will explore Yankovic’s childhood and meteoric rise to fame. Yankovic himself wrote the screenplay, along with Funny or Die alum Eric Appel. Appel also directs the film.
Weird: The Al Yankovic Story does not yet have a release date. However, it will premiere exclusively on the Roku Channel.
