I had no way to predict “A24 gets into musicals” OR “Megan Thee Stallion Parent Trap movie.” But that doesn’t mean I’m not pleasantly surprised and very intrigued by the prospect.
A24, the studio behind hits like Midsommar, The Green Knight, and Ladybird, will soon produce its first-ever musical. And this musical? It’s an R-rated comedy with a stacked cast.
F*cking Identical Twins will bring together long-time comedy stars Nathan Lane and Megan Mullally, current SNL cast member Bowen Yang, and… Megan Thee Stallion. Again, I could have never seen this combination of people coming. But A24, you have my attention.
To top it all off, the studio describes F*cking Identical Twins as “a subversive musical spin on The Parent Trap.” The story follows two business adversaries who realize they’re identical twin brothers and decide to switch places in order to reunite their divorced parents and become a family again.
The musical comedy comes from stars and writers Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp. The pair, alongside Karl Saint Lucy, originated the story as a two-man stage show at the Upright Citizens Brigade in 2014.
F*cking Identical Twins also has an experienced comedy director at its helm, Larry Charles (Seinfeld, Borat).
As A24 ventures into the musical genre for the first time, the studio also has an experienced partner to help out. Chernin Entertainment will produce and co-finance the feature. Chernin previously produced the popular musical The Greatest Showman with Hugh Jackman in 2017.
Finally, A24 has tapped Grammy-winning producer Marius de Vries (La La Land, Moulin Rouge, Coda) as Executive Music Producer. Fiora Cutler will serve as film’s music supervisor, overseeing cast musical direction with de Vries.
