Last week we brought you news on casting for Madame Web, today we have casting news for another Sony Marvel film, Kraven the Hunter. The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Russell Crowe has been cast in Kraven the Hunter. Crowe will join Aaron Taylor-Johnson who was cast as Kraven last year. There are no details yet on what role Crowe has been cast. This is the second Marvel film for Crowe, who will also be playing Zeus in Thor: Love and Thunder. WHO IS KRAVEN
Sergei Kravinoff aka Kraven was created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko and made his comic debut in Amazing Spider-Man #15. Kraven is a Russian big-game hunter and one of Spider-Man’s well-known enemies. No longer content with his usual big-game targets, Kraven decided to hunt the most dangerous foe he could imagine, Spider-Man. At one point, successfully defeating the web-slinger and burying him alive in the story arc “Kraven’s Last Hunt”.
WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT THE FILM
The film will be directed by J.C. Chandor, who most recently directed the 2019 Netflix film, Triple Frontier. Art Marcum & Matt Holloway and Richard Wenk have written the screenplay. Marcum & Holloway previously wrote the screenplay for Iron Man and another Sony Spider-Man Universe film, Moribus. So are no strangers to comic book films. Previous credits for Wenk include the two Equalizer films and also The Magnificent Seven (2016). Kraven the Hunter has targeted a January 2023 release date. Though that date has the potential to change as many projects have experienced delays over the last year.
Kraven is one of several films in development as part of the Sony Spider-Man Universe. Morbius, which features another one-time enemy of Spider-Man, is set to release in April of this year. Madame Web also appears to be progressing with Dakota Johnson in talks to start. Along with two previous Venom films, Sony looks to be rapidly expanding its slate of comic book films.
