It looks like we won’t see Thomas and Martha Wayne being shot, yet again, in an alleyway. No slow-motion shots of pearls bouncing across the asphalt as a young Bruce Wayne looks on in horror. It appears The Batman will take a cue from how Marvel approached Peter Parker’s origin in Spider-Man: Homecoming. By that, we mean to skip it entirely.

THIS BATMAN WILL ALREADY BE ESTABLISHED

Director Matt Reeves is choosing to skip where all other previous Batman films have begun. In a recent interview with Esquire, the director stated:

“We’ve seen it so many times. It’s been done too much. I knew we couldn’t do that.”

Based on the official synopsis for the film, The Batman will start two years into Bruce Wayne’s journey as the Dark Knight. With the announced run-time of 2 hours and 47 minutes, there was certainly enough time to show the origin scene. It should be a refreshing change for Reeves to skip that scene and jump right into the story. In another change, this will be the first recent DC film to not also have a simultaneous release on HBO Max. It will instead drop on the streaming service in April.

OFFICIAL SYNOPSIS

“From Warner Bros. Pictures comes Matt Reeves’ The Batman, starring Robert Pattinson in the dual role of Gotham City’s vigilante detective and his alter ego, reclusive billionaire Bruce Wayne.

“Two years of stalking the streets as the Batman (Robert Pattinson), striking fear into the hearts of criminals, has led Bruce Wayne deep into the shadows of Gotham City. With only a few trusted allies — Alfred Pennyworth (Andy Serkis), Lt. James Gordon (Jeffrey Wright) — amongst the city’s corrupt network of officials and high-profile figures, the lone vigilante has established himself as the sole embodiment of vengeance amongst his fellow citizens.

“When a killer targets Gotham’s elite with a series of sadistic machinations, a trail of cryptic clues sends the World’s Greatest Detective on an investigation into the underworld, where he encounters such characters as Selina Kyle/aka Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz), Oswald Cobblepot/aka the Penguin (Colin Farrell), Carmine Falcone (John Turturro), and Edward Nashton/aka the Riddler (Paul Dano). As the evidence begins to lead closer to home and the scale of the perpetrator’s plans becomes clear, Batman must forge new relationships, unmask the culprit, and bring justice to the abuse of power and corruption that has long plagued Gotham City.
