It’s easy to forget our mothers lived lives before us. And sometimes, they’re lives we could have never imagined. In Pieces of Her, one daughter is about to have the life she knows turned upside down by her mother’s past.

The series stars Academy Award nominee Toni Collette as Laura, a mother with a dark past. Bella Heathcote plays her daughter Andy, who begins to unravel the mystery of her mother’s history following a sudden act of violence in their sleepy Georgia town. Desperate for answers, Andy embarks on a dangerous journey across America, drawing her towards the dark, hidden heart of her family.

Pieces of Her adapts the New York Times bestselling novel by Karin Slaughter. The Netflix series comes from showrunner Charlotte Stoudt, who previously helmed Fosse/Verdon and House of Cards. Minkie Spiro directs.

In addition to Collette and Heathcote, the series also stars Jessica Barden, Jacob Scipio, Joe Dempsie, Aaron Jeffery, Omari Hardwick, Gil Birmingham, David Wenham, Calum Worthy, Nicholas Burton, and Terry O’Quinn.

For now, we don’t have a trailer to give us a closer look at the series. But you can get a bit more detail by checking out the official synopsis for the novel below.

Andrea Cooper knows everything about her mother Laura. She’s knows she’s spent her whole life in the small beachside town of Belle Isle; she knows she’s never wanted anything more than to live a quiet life as a pillar of the community; she knows she’s never kept a secret in her life. Because we all know our mothers, don’t we?

But all that changes when a Saturday afternoon trip to the mall explodes into violence and Andrea suddenly sees a completely different side to Laura. Because it turns out that before Laura was Laura, she was someone completely different. For nearly thirty years she’s been hiding from her previous identity, lying low in the hope that no one will ever find her. But now she’s been exposed, and nothing will ever be the same again.

Twenty-four hours later Laura is in the hospital, shot by an intruder who’s spent thirty years trying to track her down and discover what she knows. Andrea is on a desperate journey following the breadcrumbs of her mother’s past. And if she can’t uncover the secrets hidden there, there may be no future for either one of them. . . .

Pieces of Her arrives on Netflix March 4.
