Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate’s life for… Marvel fans? 

Every year, TorrentFreak analyzes web traffic to figure out the most popular shows of the year – based on torrenting episodes, that is. 2021 proved a major year for Disney+, as it kicked off the first roundup of Marvel TV shows. But it looks like not everyone grabbed that Disney+ subscription to watch.

TorrentFreak reports 4 out of the top 5 pirated TV shows in 2021 were Marvel series. Stealing the crown for the number one spot? WandaVision.

Other new Marvel shows, including Loki, Falcon & Winter Soldier, and Hawkeye placed second, fourth, and fifth respectively. The only non-Marvel, non-Disney+ series to crack the top 5? Netflix’s The Witcher. 

The Witcher was also one of just a couple returning shows to break the top 10 in 2021. The only other returning series to make the list was Rick and Morty. The other top 8 shows all debuted in 2021.

In total, Marvel/Disney+ landed five out of the ten spots. (Marvel’s What If… took sixth place.) Streaming series dominated the list, holding every place except for Cartoon Network’s Rick and Morty. Netflix held two slots, with The Witcher and Arcane. Apple TV+ and Prime Video each grabbed one spot, for Foundation and Wheel of Time.

Last year’s top torrented show, The Mandalorian, didn’t release a new season this year. For many years prior to that, Game of Thrones consistently dominated the most pirated list.

With many more Marvel series planned for the future, will Disney+ continue to host the most pirated shows? We’ll just have to wait until next year’s wrap-up to find out.
