Grab your mask (no, not that one) and start practicing your swordplay. According to Disney, Zorro will ride again.
Disney Branded Television is currently developing a live-action Zorro TV series, with Wilmer Valderrama set to star. The show will be a period piece, but told in a ‘modern telenovela style.’
Former Disney Channel President Gary Marsh will executive produce the series, alongside John Gertz of Zorro Productions.
“Growing up, Zorro was the one character that made me, as a Latino, feel like I could be a hero. As an adult and a storyteller, I have a responsibility in the stories that I help bring to life,” Valderrama said. “To partner with Gary and Disney to bring Zorro back into the family after 60 years and be a part of the legacy for other children to know they too can be the heroes of their own stories is a dream come true.
New president of Disney Branded Television, Ayo Davis, shared more about the existing plan for the series.
“We’re reimagining this Disney classic as a compelling period piece, set in Pueblo de Los Angeles, but told in a very modern telenovela style — with richly drawn contemporary characters and relationships set against the action, drama, suspense and humor of the original, iconic Zorro,” said Davis. “Wilmer shares our commitment to reflect the interesting and rich diversity of the human experience and we look forward to delivering a culturally relevant and entertaining story with definitional characters that will connect with our viewers for generations to come.”
Valderrama becomes the latest actor to put on the Zorro mask. Antonio Banderas famously starred in Sony Pictures’ The Mask of Zorro and The Legend of Zorro opposite Catherine Zeta-Jones. Other actors who have played the character over the years include Douglas Fairbanks, Robert Livingston, and Guy Williams.
The potential series does not have a network or platform attached yet. So if the show gets picked up, it may end up on Hulu, Disney+, or any Disney-owned cable channels.
