Take a trip back to middle school with Disney+‘s Diary of a Wimpy Kid, a new installment of the popular books by Jeff Kinney. Yes, back in 2010 there was a live adaptation. However, this new version is an animated film in the style of the artwork of the books! But don’t worry, the original live-action cast is here to voice our favorite characters.
What is Diary of a Wimpy Kid?
Diary of a Wimpy Kid follows Greg, voiced by Zachary Gordon. Yes! The original actor from the Live-Action film. Greg is heading off to middle school for the first time. Knowing that one day he will be famous, Greg does the courtesy of writing all his wild adventures down for us; in a Journal, not Diary let’s make that clear. Joining Greg is his best friend Rowley (Robert Capron), the more immature part of the dynamic duo. While Rowley doesn’t grasp that going to middle school means growing up a little, Greg has his older brother Rodrick (Devon Bostick) reminding him what can happen if he doesn’t shape up.
Diary of a Wimpy Kid is a funny coming-of-age, well middle school age, story. Middle school is a brutal time and sometimes it’s hard to fit in. So the film gives us a peek into the world reliving the mishaps of middle school and adjusting to a new environment. Along with some funny, at times misled kids, just trying to navigate their new world.
Did Wimpy Kid pass the test?
Diary of a Wimpy Kid is a lot of fun to watch. I must admit I really like the film, more than I thought I would. My favorite thing is the way it is drawn. Having the same style as the books gives it a special touch. I think Fans of the books and the original film will especially like the new installment of Diary of a Wimpy Kid. As if the animation style wasn’t enough, the story is one we are familiar with, but in a good way. Seeing as it’s set in middle school, most would assume it’s for children, but it can be watched by all ages. The script leaves you wanting more, and it does a good job of drawing you in. Along with the nice trip back in time, there is also a strong theme of friendship and doing what is right.
Diary of a Wimpy Kid is directed by Swinton O. Scott (Futurama). The script is written by none other than Jeff Kinney, who is also a producer for this project. Then we have Brady Noon (The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers) voicing Greg, Ethan William Childress (Mixed-ish) as Rowley, Erica Cerra (The 100) plays Greg’s mom Susan, and Hunter Dillon (Holly Hobbie) takes on Rodrick to name a few.
Diary of a Wimpy Kid will stream exclusively on Disney+ beginning December 3rd! And Stay Tuned to That Hashtag Show for more reviews!
