The Zack Snyder-Netflix universe keeps growing. The director’s next feature, Rebel Moon, just added Sofia Boutella.
Deadline reports Boutella wowed Snyder during auditions after a months-long casting process. She will lead the sci-fi flick, which follows a young woman with a mysterious past sent to seek out warriors from neighboring planets to help save her peaceful community from a tyrannical army.
Rebel Moon marks Snyder’s next picture in his overall deal with Netflix. He previously debuted zombie flicks Army of the Dead and Army of Thieves on the platform. Following the success of the former, Snyder’s Stone Quarry production company signed a first-look deal with the streamer.
Boutella landed her breakout role in The Kingsman. Since then, she’s also starred in The Mummy with Tom Cruise, as well as Atomic Blonde with Charlize Theron.
Snyder will direct Rebel Moon, which he co-wrote with Shay Hatten and Kurt Johnstad. Deborah Snyder and Wesley Coller produce the feature under The Stone Quarry. Eric Newman produces for Grand Electric, for which Sarah Bowen also executive produces. The feature draws inspiration from the world of Star Wars (as fans might guess from the title).
“This is me growing up as an Akira Kurosawa fan, a Star Wars fan,” said Snyder. “It’s my love of sci-fi and a giant adventure. My hope is that this also becomes a massive IP and a universe that can be built out.”
Snyder and Stone Quarry will also produce the upcoming Army of the Dead spinoff anime series, as well as the Norse mythology series, Twilight of the Gods.
