Hello everyone, your friendly neighborhood Professor Hulk here. I’m about to drop some knowledge on some exciting stuff going on in the film and TV world. Last week we shared with you details on Blue Beetle. This week, we’re talking about Darkman.
Universal has seen some modest (at least by COVID standards) box office returns for horror movie sequels and remakes. The Forever Purge was a huge success for the studio. Candyman performed well. Halloween Kills is tracking well, so fingers crossed.
Universal has since started looking back in their catalogue for horror movie franchises with what my sources described as “strong franchise potential”. While they’re still evaluating and brainstorming ideas, one franchise has become the front runner for a reboot and that’s Sam Raimi‘s Darkman.
Darkman is about a vigilante who after an attack becomes mentally unhinged and creates synthetic faces as disguises. THS can exclusively reveal that Universal is working on a reboot for Darkman.
The Details Of Darkman And More
The studio is keen to get the ball rolling on this project with my sources telling me one studio executive was surprised it took the studio this long to greenlight a reboot. However the popularity of R-rated comic book movies (i.e. Logan, Deadpool, etc) plays a huge role. The popularity of Sam Raimi between Raimi-verse Spider-Man characters appearing in No Way Home and his upcoming film, Doctor Strange and the Multiverse Of Madness is said to play a significant factor.
An outline has been submitted and from this document I was able to gleam that it will be the same characters and plot; however the film will place a greater emphasis on Peyton’s mental state and the intense methods it produces. They are also said to be aiming for an R rating which will keep it in line with the original.
A director is being sought but it’s said that the studio is not bringing Sam Raimi back. The studio is looking for a relative unknown to direct. One director who’s thrown his name into the ring is Werewolves Within director Josh Ruben. We don’t know if Universal would pick him at this time though.
There’s no casting for the film currently either although the outline I was able to read did leave ethnicity open for Peyton and others.
