A Dead Boy Detectives series could be coming to HBO Max. The streamer is currently developing a pilot starring the characters created by Neil Gaiman.
The Dead Boy Detectives, Edwin and Charles, first appeared in issue #25 of Gaiman’s Sandman. They reappeared in Vertigo’s Children’s Crusade crossover, during which they officially took on the “Dead Boy Detectives” moniker. Their popularity with fans led to the 2001 four-issue mini-series Sandman Presents: Dead Boy Detectives. More recently, the pair had a twelve-issue series debut in 2014.
Interestingly, the characters will appear in the upcoming season of DC’s Doom Patrol. Ty Tennant and Sebastian Croft have already been cast as Edwin and Charles for that series. However, HBO Max appears to be actively casting for this Dead Boy Detectives pilot. So even though it would make sense to set them up for a spinoff series from Doom Patrol, it looks like HBO Max plans to keep those universes separate for now.
Steve Yockey (Supernatural, The Flight Attendant) will write and executive produce the pilot. (According to IMDb, Yockey is also set to write an episode of Doom Patrol season 3… Could it be one with the Dead Boy Detectives? The plot thickens!)
DC superproducer Greg Berlanti also executive produces the pilot, along with Sarah Schechter and David Madden. At this time, no director is attached. HBO Max plans to begin shooting in November.
If the Dead Boy Detectives pilot earns a series order, it will mark yet another show in the recent TV boom for Gaiman. Starz has American Gods, while Netflix has Lucifer and the upcoming adaptation of The Sandman. Meanwhile, Amazon recently announced both a second season of Good Omens and an Anansi Boys series.
