Before you explode about another reboot of your favorite 90’s property, give it a chance. The Peacock led drama-reboot of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air has found its lead. In a video, Will Smith dropped the news that Jabari Banks landed the role of Will in the upcoming show. Check out the video below.
The new series changes the format a bit from what we saw in the 1990’s show. First off, it’s an hourlong instead of 30 minutes. It already has a two-season order from Peacock. T.J. Brady and Rasheed Newson serve as co-showrunners. Morgan Cooper directs and also is a co-writer on the show.
This time around, the show is set in the present day and follows Will’s journey from West Philadelphia to Beverly Hills. The extra 30 minutes per episode allows for more exploration into the themes and conflicts of that journey. Interestingly enough, this is Banks’s first television role. He’s a singer, songwriter, and basketball player in addition to acting. We’ll have to see just how his take on Will differs from the career-making performance by Will Smith in the original show.
There’s no release date currently, but you can expect it on Peacock sometime in the next year. You can also watch every season of the original Fresh Prince on HBO Max.
