Even with the “drama” surrounding whether or not she should sue Disney, Emma Stone is getting a sequel to Cruella. The 101 Dalmatians spin-off released earlier this year in theaters and on Disney+ Premiere Access. It looks like she’s settled whatever differences she has with the company.
Deadline is reporting that she has a deal for the sequel. The first film earned more than $222 million in ticket sales. Disney is still working through the kinks in their new hybrid release model that saw movies like Jungle Cruise and Black Widow release on Disney+ simultaneously with theaters. Scarlett Johansson recently sued Disney over breach of contract because of this release method for Black Widow.
The original director Craig Gillespie and the writer Tony McNamara are both returning for the sequel. Cruella was praised for it’s inventive costume design and wonderful lead character. You can read THS’s review for the film right here.
It was thought that Emma Stone would follow in the footsteps of Johansson, but she didn’t. Neither did Dwayne Johnson for the release of Jungle Cruise. This could be a blow to her case, but we’ll have to see how all of this works out. It’s a good sign for the hybrid release model for Disney+ though. With the COVID-19 pandemic still raging, people don’t want to return to theaters just yet.
There’s no release date or any other information about Cruella 2, but we’ll keep you updated as this story develops.
