NEW RELEASE FILMS
SPACE JAM: A NEW LEGACY (IN THEATERS AND ON HBO MAX)
The long-awaited sequel to the classic 90’s Looney Tunes-meets-Michael Jordan film is here! But, this time Lebron James takes center stage. Nostalgia and family audiences is what’s going to drive sales through the roof with this one. But, critics are saying that this sequel is a shameless marketing-driven exercise. As for me, I’m still holding out hope that they don’t ruin my childhood with this one.
ESCAPE ROOM 2: TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS (IN THEATERS)
The sequel to the surprise hit, Escape Room, is expected to be cashing in on the teenage demographic this weekend. Although the first wasn’t a critical darling, it was a fun and intense little thriller that captivated audiences. This one is tracking a little bit below its predecessor in reviews… but, that won’t stop fans of the original from showing up in droves. Our own Jessica Lancaster said, “Escape Room 2 delivers a fast-paced story and a series of moderately interesting puzzles, but never quite fulfills its promise to up the stakes”.

PIG (IN SELECT THEATERS)
This Nicolas Cage-led drama from independent film studio NEON, will not be for everyone. But, those who open themselves up to this movie, will be gifted with a very raw and personal experience that is full of surprises. Nicolas Cage is also the best he has possibly ever been. And critics agree, at the time of writing, Pig has a 98% Certified Fresh RT score. If your in the mood for something different than the norm this week, you should definitely do yourself a favor and check this one out.

GUNPOWDER MILKSHAKE (NETFLIX)
This female-led action romp in the vein of John Wick, is already proving to be divisive among critics and audiences. If your in the mood for some brutal and kinetic action with an incredible ensemble cast, you could do much worse than Gunpowder Milkshake. Just don’t expect an Oscar-Winning screenplay from this franchise-starter hopeful.

FEAR STREET PART THREE: 1666 (NETFLIX)
The conclusion to Netflix’s three-part, three-week horror film event is here! This series of films has really caught on and become a huge hit for the streaming giant. And it’s no wonder why. The last two films have been a celebration of classic horror of the past, capturing the nostalgia and love for the genre. This third installment is easily the best of the three, really bringing the whole trilogy full circle. If your a fan of horror, make sure to not miss out on this lovingly crafted series of movies.

NEW RELEASE TV
AMERICAN HORROR STORIES (FX ON HULU)
Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk return to their horror roots, with the spin-off anthology series American Horror Stories. This time around every week will be a new stand-alone story. In the premiere, they’ve already broken from their promise, and delivered a two-part episode, however. I still think this is a great idea for the showrunners though, as they have proved time and time again with their flagship series… that they do not know how to keep their seasons afloat after promising starts. Hopefully, with this new construct, they will be able to hone in their storytelling skills. The first two episodes are streaming now on Hulu.
THE NORTH WATER (AMC+)
AMC’s new period drama series The North Water will certainly appease fans, looking for more prestige television. The cast includes Colin Farrell and Jack O’Connell and follows the story of Patrick Sumner (O’Connell), a disgraced ex-army surgeon who signs up as the ship’s doctor on a whaling expedition to the Arctic. But the ferocity of the elements is matched by the violence of his crew mates…” The on-location filming in the Arctic and breathtaking production design, prove what kind of scope this series is reaching for. The first episode premiered Wednesday on AMC+, and tune in weekly for a new installment.
