The tables have certainly turned for Steven Spielberg. Lately he’s been his one critic, having recently bucked the Hollywood consensus when it comes to theatrical versus streaming movies in the industry. Now that has changed completely, as the legendary director has reached an arrangement on a multi-year deal with Netflix.
His company Amblin Partners just secured a multi-year deal with Netflix that will release multiple feature films per year. The deal with the streaming service will coexist (hopefully peacefully) as Spielberg and Amblin continue their partnership with Universal Pictures. So don’t worry! the Raiders of the Lost Ark director isn’t ditching Universal. He’ll continue to produce films for both studios. (Amblin extended its deal with Universal last November.)
Both companies have been collaborating for some time now. Netflix already released a Amblin-produced film, The Trial of the Chicago 7. It got a total count of six Oscar nominations. Bradley Cooper is directing and and starring in called Maestro. Netflix was able to acquire to finance and distribute the film. Cooper’s role will be on the legendary film composer, Leonard Bernstein and is now in pre-production.
Steven Spielberg discusses deal with Netflix
“At Amblin, storytelling will forever be at the center of everything we do, and from the minute Ted and I started discussing a partnership, it was abundantly clear that we had an amazing opportunity to tell new stories together and reach audiences in new ways.”
“This new avenue for our films, alongside the stories we continue to tell with our longtime family at Universal and our other partners, will be incredibly fulfilling for me personally since we get to embark on it together with Ted, and I can’t wait to get started with him, Scott, and the entire Netflix team.”
Director Steven Spielberg, Amblin Partners
Netflix co-CEO and CCO Ted Sarandos called Spielberg “a creative visionary and leader like so many others around the world.” Likewise, Jeff Small, Amblin Partners, CEO shared that “[b]y deepening our ties with Netflix via this new film partnership, we are building on what has for many years been an incredibly successful working relationship in both television and film.”
What’s Next?
Up ahead next Spielberg is the next Indiana Jones, currently filming overseas in the United Kingdom. Likely hitting theaters first, though, is Jurassic World: Dominion. That’s set for a June 10th, 2022 release. Spielberg is the executive producer on Dominion, with Colin Trevorrow back to direct.
