Peacock streaming service is rolling out the hits! First, with the Saved By the Bell Reboot and then Punky Brewster. Now in partnership with Channel 4, Peacock gives us a musical comedy series, We Are Lady Parts. The series is created, written, and directed by Nida Manzoor who is said to have drawn from her own experiences around the diverse culture and artists in London.

We Are Lady Parts tells the story of an all-female, Muslim punk band – Lady Parts – who is on a mission to find a lead guitarist…as well as play their first LIVE gig. The band is made up of strong-willed rhythm guitarist Saira (Sarah Kameela Impey), quirky mother and bassist Bisma (Faith Omole), and their hot-tempered drummer Ayesha (Juliette Motamed). However, they find their missing piece in the strangest place with Amina (Anja Vasan). Amina is a super shy, microbiologist who hides her guitar talent from the world…she also has wicked stage fright.

I absolutely loved We are Lady Parts. The series humanizes a culture that far too often is villainized. The series was familiar and relatable while feeling like something I had never seen before. As someone who is not of the Muslim faith, I found the show educational, while still being inviting. Through fantastic writing, fun punk songs, and hilarious daydream cutaways that give Scrubs a run for its money.

It’s Not All Fun And Punk Rock Games

However, We are Lady Parts isn’t all fun and punk rock games. While watching the series, there are plenty of not-so-subtle clues that Manzoor plans to rock the boat a little bit and upend stereotypes about the Muslim culture. Whether it’s going against arranged marriage or changing what is and wasn’t isn’t haram (forbidden/sinful), the characters are put into situations that force them to evaluate who they actually are and want to be.
