Jim Starlin’s Dreadstar Returns Review

Vanth Dreadstar Returns

Thanks to Paul Christen with PAL Public Relations I was able to get an early look at Dreadstar Returns. Written by Jim Starlin, Inked by Jaime Jameson, and lettered by Dave Lanphear, we get to pick up the Story of Vanth Dreadstar many years after his first appearance in the comic world. Reintroducing to the superhero Dreadstar, this graphic novel takes us to a planet where it is ruled by a tyrant, that Dreadstar must put an end to his evil ways. While there Dreadstar is summoned to help his old crew that has found trouble on their homeworld. Once reunited with his crew, they embark on an epic journey to save the world against a new enemy. Can Dreadstar and his team bring justice and peace back to the universe?

The Creative Team

Writer, Penciler, and Colorist Jim Starlin is joined by a very talented creative team. Inker Jaime Jameson helped Starlin bring a unique look to this comic. The details are outstanding with every scene is easy to follow. They also do an amazing job in giving each character their own look and keeping them looking the same throughout the comic. The colors and shading do a great job throughout the comic highlighting the mood and action scenes while keeping that classic Starlin look and mixing it with a modern feel. Letter Cave Lanphear also did an amazing job. The text was easy to read and was placed well throughout the comic even on. As you read through the comic there were some panels that had a lot of text in them (which was needed for the story), where you could easily get lost on where to read next.

My Final Thoughts

One of the best things about this comic is it doesn’t matter if you have read to original Dreadstar 1982 comic series. Jim Starlin did an amazing job of writing it so that someone that never heard of Dreadstar could enjoy and follow it. This comic had a little bit of everything in it, from action to romance there really wasn’t any downtime.

As a kid that grew up in the ’80s, this comic gave me a Space He-Man kind of feel. It is that and great storytelling that made this comic enjoyable to read. I really have no complaints about this graphic novel other than some pannels were a little hard to follow with all the text in them but that wasn’t enough to take away or distract you from the story. If you are a fan of comics and Jim Starlin you will want to pick up this graphic novel!
