Get ready to head back to the chocolate factory. There’s a new Willy Wonka in town, and it’s Timothée Chalamet.
Uh… okay?
The Oscar-nominated actor will play the iconic inventor/candy connoisseur in a new film. Rather than redapt the Roald Dahl book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, this movie will be a Wonka origin story. Specific plot details remain unknown, but we will see a young Wonka’s adventures prior to opening his world famous chocolate factory.
Deadline reports Chalamet has been the studio’s top choice for the role for a while now, but scheduling proved difficult. (The film will feature musical numbers, for which Chalamet needs to train and practice for.)
This upcoming Wonka flick marks the third time Warner Bros. has adapted Dahl’s story. The 1971 feature starred Gene Wilder as Wonka. Later, WB dropped a second adaptation starring Johnny Depp in 2005. As an origin story set years before these stories, the character Charlie Bucket won’t appear in Chalamet’s film.
Paul King will direct the screenplay he wrote with Simon Farnaby.
So, what do you think about yet another Wonka adaptation? And how do you feel about Chalamet in the role? Do you think this movie’s going to reveal him as a secret triple threat? Let us know in the comments.
