While details about Amazon’s Lord of the Rings prequel series have been scarce, we are learning more about the creative team behind it. Director Wayne Che Yip just joined the series.
Yip boards the LOTR project as a director and co-executive producer. He will direct four episodes of the series, following the work of J.A. Bayona who directs the first two episodes.

Yip has an impressive background in genre TV. He previously directed episodes of Doctor Who, Misfits, Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger, Hunters, and more. Yip also directs episodes of Amazon’s upcoming Wheel of Time adaptation.
The Lord of the Rings series is described as an “epic drama” prequel. The show takes place thousands of years before the events of the LOTR films, during the Second Age of Middle-earth. The series will follow an ensemble of characters as they confront the re-emergence of evil. (The villain hasn’t been confirmed, but we have an idea of who to expect.)
Amazon acquired the rights to Lord of the Rings for nearly $250 million. Production on the first season began in Auckland in February 2020, but the COVID-19 pandemic soon put it on hold. Now filming is underway again.
Amazon Prime expects to launch the series later this year. A second season has already been ordered as well.
