It appears that Resident Alien is more popular than any of us had ever thought. SyFy certainly agrees, at any rate. They can recognize a sleeper hit when they see it coming. Why else would they renew it for a second season?
Probably the best indication of SyFy’s hopes for Resident Alien is that they renewed the show for a second season even though the first season hasn’t ended yet. Yes, that’s right. At the time of this writing, the show is at episode 8 out of a 10-episode first season. Now that’s what I call high hopes.
Resident Alien: The New Firefly?
If you’re wondering why I’m comparing Resident Alien with Firefly, then you’ve clearly never watched the latter. Alan Tudyk, who plays the lead role of Dr. Harry Vanderspeigle in Resident Alien, also played Hoban “Wash” Washburne in Firefly as the pilot of Serenity. It’s like the perfect crossover, really. Both shows got really good reviews from critics, and good ratings from the audiences.
Admittedly, there is a big difference between Resident Alien and Firefly though. Firefly got canceled by Fox after only a single 14-episode season in spite of the high praise. Resident Alien, on the other hand, is being renewed for a second season even before the first one is over. Therefore, it’s unlikely SyFy’s newest hit is going to go the way of Firefly. Let us all hope it stays that way, shall we?
Conclusion
SyFy is renewing Resident Alien for a second season even though the finale for the first season hasn’t even aired yet. Said finale will air on March 31, 2021 at 10:00 P.M. on SyFy. If you want to catch this sci-fi comedy-drama series, check it out on Peacock. They have the first 3 episodes for free there, so you can decide for yourself whether you want to sign up for a Peacock subscription to watch this show.
