Those of you old or geeky enough to have seen the original Kung Fu might think that it wouldn’t seem the first, second or third choice for a new life on The CW. Now we have some footage to judge for ourselves.
The show stars Olivia Liang (Legacies). It follows Nicky Chen, a young Chinese-American woman who after experiencing a quarter life crisis gives up the modern world for a stay at an isolated monastery in China.
When she returns home to her different much darker town now teeming with crime and corruption. She uses her new martial skills to clean up her town while also searching for the assassin who took her Master’s life.
Why Kung Fu?
Kung Fu also stars Tzi Ma as Nicky’s father Jin Chen. A restaurant owner with secrets of his own that could bring down their family business. Kheng Hua Tan is Nicky’s mother Mei-Li Chen, a woman who helped her husband with his business and also holds damaging secrets; Jon Prasida as Nicky’s brother Ryan Chen, a quick-witted pre-med student. Finally, Shannon Dang as Nicky’s tech-savvy older sister Althea Chen, who just got engaged and is focused on planning the perfect wedding for her perfect life.
Filling out the cast is Tony Chung as Althea’s fiancé Dennis, Gavin Stenhouse as Assistant District Attorney and Nicky’s ex-boyfriend Evan, and Eddie Liu as her new love interest Henry.
The original Kung Fu ran for 63 episodes. It starred David Carradine from 1972-1975 at the height of the West’s interest in Martial arts.
Christina M. Kim (Blindspot) has been set as showrunner and executive producer alongside co-showrunner Robert Berens (Supernatural). Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schecter, Martin Gero (Blindspot) and David Madden also executive-produce, and Hanelle Culpepper directed and co-executive-produced the pilot.
Kung Fu premieres on Wednesday April 7, 2021 on The CW and CWTV.com, the next day.
