On Monday we learned that Game of Thrones star Indira Varma has joined the cast of the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi Star Wars spin-off series. Ewan McGregor (Kenobi) and Hayden Christensen (Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader) will reprise their respective roles in the show…. Leaving the question of who Varma will portray. It’s certainly possible she’ll play a brand new character. The likelihood, however, is that she’ll play another throwback character to The Clone Wars: Satine Kryze.
Courtesy of The Mandalorian, we’ve already seen just how well “new” Star Wars can incorporate crossover characters. Katee Sackhoff’s Bo-Katan Kryze is a prime example. Granted, her character survived the Clone Wars, as well as the Galactic Civil War. Her sister, the Duchess Satine Kryze, however, well…. Satine met her fate on Mandalore when Maul murdered her before Obi-Wan’s very eyes. So why does it make sense for Indira Varma to play her in live-action now?
Indira Varma to portray Satine Kryze in Star Wars live-action?
Yes, Obi-Wan’s forbidden love perished in the Clone Wars episode “The Lawless.” Notwithstanding, we cannot understate the impact that Satine Kryze had on the Jedi Master. He loved her so much that he would have even left the Jedi Order to be with her, had she only asked. So strong was their bond that it continued to fuel Maul’s rage for Kenobi long after her death. (We saw evidence of that in Star Wars Rebels.) From what we know, the Kenobi series takes place prior to the old enemies meeting again on Tatooine. It’s a time when Obi-Wan would be alone, and reflective. That makes Indira Varma’s portrayal of the departed Duchess in flashbacks perfect for the setting.
The experienced actress is perfect the role, both in terms of talent and physical appearance. Her striking facial features nearly mimic those of the animated Satine Kryze. Granted, she’ll have to dye her hair or don a blonde wig, but Indira Varma can certainly pull the look off easily. If she does, she’ll make many, many folks happy. Fans have wanted to see more of Obi-Wan’s and Satine’s relationship since they first flirted. Why?
Will flashbacks reveal Obi-Wan’s isolation and pain?
Well, we’ve always been taught that the Jedi Order forbids attachments. The relationship of Anakin Skywalker and Padmé Amida is a prime example of how it could all go wrong. If Indira Varma does indeed portray Satine Kryze, however, we’ll get to see Jedi relationships in a whole new light. Losing Satine, both in terms of the end of their more intimate relationship and her death, haunted Obi-Wan. The new Star Wars series is the perfect vehicle by which we can finally see just how much.
