Do you remember back in Star Wars: A New Hope, when the Millennium Falcon roared out of Docking Bay 94 as blaster bolts from stormtroopers chased after her? Well, as it turns out, the producers of The Mandalorian wanted to recapture that feeling by having that exact bay as a cameo. Unfortunately, plans change.
Phil Szostak and Anton Grandert recently went on Twitter and Instagram, respectively, to discuss some of The Mandalorian‘s original plans for the show. Originally, “Chapter 5: The Gunslinger” was originally going to feature the Razor Crest landing at Docking Bay 94. This would’ve been a pretty nice nod to the original trilogy, since the show revealed that it takes place a short time after Return of the Jedi at the end of season 2.
Unfortunately, the producers of The Mandalorian ultimately abandoned that Docking Bay 94 cameo. Instead, they just shrunk down the original area. The social media posts don’t provide any explanation, so we still don’t know why they did this. Maybe they thought that it would make the episode too long. Maybe they thought that it would take too long to animate. We just don’t know, and anything we say it just speculation at this point. We’ll just have to wait for any official word on this, if it ever comes.
Docking Bay 94: What Could’ve Been in The Mandalorian
Even though Docking Bay 94 never made it into The Mandalorian proper, at least we still have some cool concept art to admire. You can even imagine them being in the end credit sequence of an episode. Just play the above video as background music, and sit back, and enjoy.
The artists of The Mandalorian even went out of their way to depict how Docking Bay 94 would connect to the streets of Mos Eisley outside. It really puts their effort and creative thinking into perspective, doesn’t it?
Conclusion
The Mandalorian producers originally wanted the Razor Crest to land in Docking Bay 94 while she was on Tatooine. Unfortunately, those plans never came to be for reasons still unknown. Oh, well. At least we have some nice concept art to admire, courtesy of Twitter and Instagram.
