Back on Disney Investor Day, Lucasfilm announced a slew of new Star Wars productions coming to Disney+. Ahoska Tano is getting her own series. Likewise, the Bad Batch from The Clone Wars will get to continue their animated adventures. And we all know Ewan McGregor is returning as Obi-Wan Kenobi. But there was one show among them, however, a spinoff from The Mandalorian, that now appears to be in jeopardy… All because of Gina Carano.
In case you live under a rock and haven’t yet hear the news, Disney/Lucasfilm summarily fired Gina Carano yesterday. The firing comes as the result of statements the Cara Dune actress made on social media. In one, which she seems to liken criticism she’s received on social media to neighbors turning on Jewish neighbors in Nazi Germany. Setting aside discussion of the comments themselves, the fact remains that she will no longer have a role in Star Wars. Because of that, the future of Rangers of the New Republic, a new, live-action Star Wars show, appears to be in doubt.
Will Gina Carano Firing affect Star Wars: Rangers of the New Republic?
Here’s the official synopsis for Rangers of the New Republic:
Set within the timeline of The Mandalorian, the new live-action series from executive producers Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni will intersect with future stories and culminate into a climactic story event.”
It is (or, rather, was) widely believed that the show would be the rumored Cara Dune spin-off. The Mandalorian Season 2 certainly appeared to have set it up that way, at least. In season 2, Gina Carano saw her character become a Republic Marshal of Navarro. Logic dictated that her new role would have paved the way for her own adventures in the new series. Let’s assume those rumors to be true. She assuredly would have been the show’s star. How Lucasfilm will handle the production moving forward in Carano’s absence from the Star Wars franchise remains to be seen. Thankfully, in that there was no timetable for the show’s production, there’s plenty of time to figure it out.
