A long, long time ago (2005), Sharkboy and Lavagirl battled alien foes on Planet Drool. Now, they’re all grown up and back in action in We Can Be Heroes.

Okay, so, this isn’t exactly a Sharkboy and Lavagirl sequel. In We Can Be Heroes, alien invaders kidnap Earth’s superheroes. That forces their kids to team up to save their parents (and the world) instead. Sharkboy and Lavagirl are among the kidnapped heroes, and their daughter Guppy will be one of the kids taking up the heroic rescue mission.

Still, it’s fun to see a little callback to old characters. Taylor Dooley even reprises her role as Lavagirl. (Original Sharkboy Taylor Lautner was recast though. JJ Dashnaw takes over the role for We Can Be Heroes.)

Robert Rodriguez, who directed The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3-D told Entertainment Weekly people kept asking him to reboot the film. He said the pandemic proved an ideal time to release We Can Be Heroes.

“A lot of families have spent a lot of time together,” Rodriguez told EW. “I’ve been getting calls from all kinds of studios: ‘Reboot Spy Kids.’ ‘Reboot Sharkboy.’ Of course they want to. They’re all sitting at home with their kids.”

Sharkboy and Spy Kids definitely have a unique feel to them. Growing up, both these movies were a hit with my family. Hopefully Rodriguez can capture the same dynamic for Netflix.

We Can Be Heroes starts streaming on Netflix January 1, 2020.
