Patty Jenkins whipped up an amazing origin story to one of DC’s greatest heroines in 2017. Wonder Woman broke the mold and finally gave us an incredible, female-driven superhero movie, breaking the supposed curse. However, the sequel, which was green lit almost immediately, seems to suffer under its own curse. Wonder Woman 1984 was set for release in in Christmas of 2019, but has since been moved multiple times. Just when they thought the release felt good, COVID-19 hit, messing up the release schedule once more. With the virus raging, the question of what to do with it lingers…or at least it did. The Wonder Woman 1984 release date is set!
Theaters reopened in hopes of drawing moviegoers back to the big screen, but with continued health restrictions the theaters struggled. Studios do not wish to release multi-billion movies to near empty theaters. Who can blame them? Will Wonder Woman 84 keep getting pushed back or will it release to streaming on HBOMax? The final answer is YES!
With an either/or question a single yes or no rarely if ever works. In this case it does. Wonder Woman 84 will release Christmas day both in theaters AND on HBOMax! Wait. So if its streaming at the same time does that mean it will be hidden behind a paywall like Mulan? NOPE! Viewers will have the choice of going to a movie theater and seeing it on the big screen or staying home and watching it from their couches, computers, etc. International viewers will get a head start if they wish to go to the theaters. International audiences will get a December 16th release date.
Wonder Woman 1984 Release Date Set – Bitter Sweet
“We appreciate how patient audiences have been and given the great anticipation around WONDER WOMAN 1984 we are grateful to be able to make this terrifically entertaining movie widely available in these challenging times.”
Toby Emmerich, Chairman, Warner Bros. Pictures Group.
This release comes as bittersweet news. DC struggled with their movie slate for many years. They struggled to be Marvel and suffered from many missteps along the way. Recently, however, DC altered their plans and took up their own strategy for story telling. Where Marvel ties everything together, DC decided to do more stand-alone movies that did not all have to tie in together. DC now rides a string of hits with the best yet to come.
Wonder Woman 84 should continue this streak, but its box office will not likely show how well it does or could have done. Even if it succeeds, its box office will not reach the levels it should have. Hopefully, future films will not suffer the same fate and we can go back to normal soon. Until then pick your mode and get ready to see Wonder Woman take on her rival Cheetah on December 25th.
