The “would have, should have, could have” debate over the Star Wars sequel trilogy rages on. From questions regarding character’s roles to Colin Trevorrow’s take on Episode IX, fans have had plenty on which to postulate and ponder. This time, however, the source material for discussion comes from an unlikely place. Believe it or not, it’s none other than George Lucas himself fanning the flames. He’s done so by mentioning two characters that would have played a prominent role in his sequel trilogy: Darth Maul, and Darth Talon.
In the upcoming, second edition of Star Wars Archives, (this time covering 1999-2005), Lucas discusses his vision for the sequel trilogy at length. Leia would still have played a central role as she did in the eventual films. It is the villains of Lucas’ sequel trilogy, though, that are now making fans wish they could have seen the Lucas sequels come to light. “There’s a power vacuum so gangsters, like the Hutts, are taking advantage of the situation, and there is chaos,” Lucas explained of his sequel setting.
“The key person is Darth Maul …”
[Darth Maul] had been resurrected in The Clone Wars cartoons—he brings all the gangs together. [Maul]’s very old, and we have two versions of him. One is with a set of cybernetic legs like a spider, and then later on he has metal legs and he was a little bit bigger, more of a superhero.”
Thankfully, we got to see a bit of that Maul storyline play out. (See The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels, and even via cameo in Solo: A Star Wars Story.) What’s even more interesting is that Lucas would have brought in another fan favorite yet non-canon character from the comic books as well.
Darth Talon in live-action?
Darth Maul trained a girl, Darth Talon, who was in the comic books, as his apprentice. She was the new Darth Vader, and most of the action was with her. So these were the two main villains of the trilogy.”
What a sight it would have been to see the two red-skinned Sith scourging the galaxy on film. Perhaps, though, there’s still a chance we might get to see Darth Talon, after all. Rumor has it that Leslye Hedland’s new Star Wars series for Disney+ will be “female-centric.”
It will also take place in a whole new era of the franchise. Could that include Darth Talon?
