LEGO will soon show that they’re afraid of no ghost with their new ECTO-1 set, made to commemorate Ghostbusters: Afterlife. That is, whenever they get around to releasing that movie.
In the meantime though, LEGO is proud to unveil the ECTO-1 set, based on the version that will appear in Ghostbusters: Afterlife. The ECTO-1 set will be available from LEGO’s own website and will launch on November 15, 2020; which is only just over a week in the future as of this writing. The ECTO-1 set will cost a whopping $199.99 though. Yeah, that’s a huge chunk out of your wallet. When you see why though, it’ll make sense.
The LEGO Ecto-1 For All Your Ghostbusting Needs
The LEGO ECTO-1 set is gigantic. There’s no other way to describe it. For starters, it’s made up of 2352 separate pieces. When fully assembled, the set measures over 8″ (22.5 cm) tall, 18″ (47 cm) long, and 6″ (16.5 cm) wide. Yeah, if you’re planning on building this, you’re going to have to make a lot of time. Moreover, you’re going to need a pretty big display case to display it in. Bigger if you’re planning to fit ECTO-1 into a LEGO diorama scene.
The ECTO-1 set is even fully interactable. The driver and passenger seats both open, allowing you to see into their interior. You can even turn the steering wheel to operate the front wheels, although a knob on the top of the car does that perfect well too. Even the hood opens up to show off the LEGO car engine (non-working, unfortunately) inside.
An assortment of sensors (including a ghost sniffer) populate the top of the ECTO-1 set. Funnily enough, the tires are connected to the sensors somehow, so rolling the vehicle around will rotate the sensors too. It’s a fun touch if you plan on horsing around with it before putting it on display.
The ECTO-1 set even features a rear gunner’s seat like the one that will appear in Afterlife. To open it, you press a switch on the left side of the vehicle, causing the seat to pop out. To close it, you just push the seat back in, and it will lock in with the tab.
The ECTO-1 set also features a cute little remote ghost trap. You just press a lever on the back to release it, and then you presumably take a bit of fiddling to put it back in.
Conclusion
The LEGO ECTO-1 set will be available from LEGO’s website on November 15, 2020 for a grand total of $119.99. The price does make sense though, considering the level of detail they’ve put on this thing. Considering how popular it might be, if you plan on getting it, you might want to mark November 15 (specifically 9 PM PT/12 AM EST) on your calendar, because for some reason, LEGO.com doesn’t allow you to preorder it.
