For someone who is supposedly done with Star Wars, John Boyega has been very vocal about the franchise recently. Yesterday we told you about the “Finn that might have been,” had Colin Trevorrow gotten to present his vision of Episode IX. In it, Finn featured far more prominently. He would have travelled to the core world of Coruscant and led an uprising at the Imperial epicenter of the galaxy. Instead, well, we know what happened in The Rise of Skywalker. So what would it take for Boyega to reprise his role as the turncoat trooper?
Due to the sequel trilogy’s critical reception (thanks in most part to The Last Jedi and its effect on the franchise), FN-2187 returning in a feature film is an unlikely option. Early last year, however, rumors circulated regarding a possible Finn and Poe live-action team-up for the new Star Wars television franchise on Disney+. That rumor, though, seemingly died with The Rise of Skywalker’s release. But, to paraphrase Yoda, “there is another…” possibility.
Could Finn return in an animated Star Wars series?
In continuing to discuss the Trevorrow’s treatment of his character, Boyega suggested in his Yahoo! interview that he’d still be open to returning. One way in which Finn could return is via an animated series for Disney+. With feature films not returning until 2023 now, televised Star Wars seems to be the more likely scenario. Given the success of The Mandalorian and the revived Clone Wars, perhaps it’s not such a bad bet:
I’m a Mandalorian fan, so Lucasfilm is doing very well with the TV shows. An animated show would be dope! We could do it from home.”
~ John Boyega
Animated Star Wars is returning anyway, after all. The Bad Batch are getting their own Clone Wars spinoff series. It’s not too much of a stretch to continue the stories of the Sequel trilogy through a Finn and Poe animated series. (Don’t forget – Oscar Isaac has already voiced Poe in Star Wars: Resistance….)
