Renegade Games just took a huge leap forward in the gaming world. Recently I previewed one of their Kickstarter games, Embarcadero, but Power Ranger fans will recognize Renegade Games from their Power Ranger’s game Heroes of the Grid. Apparently Hasbro liked them enough that Hasbro just announced an ongoing agreement with Renegade Games. Hasbro franchise games are coming from Renegade Games. Such franchises include Power Rangers, Transformers, My Little Pony, and GI Joe.
These new games could be anything from role playing games (RPGs) to tabletop/card games. Power Rangers will lead off the RPG games with an in-development project based around the Dungeons &Dragons 5E rules system. Power Rangers will also receive a deck-builder which will be demo’d at Renegade Con (Oct 9-11) and released in the second quarter of 2021.
Scott Gaeta talked about the move to use the 5E (5th edition) D&D rules. He said:
“Part of the strategy here is that if we want a GI Joe fan to play an RPG, we want to use the system that’s most common and widely known. Fifth Edition at this point is the common language in RPGs. We went back and forth on our discussions but we landed on Fifth Edition being what we wanted to use to achieve our design goals.”

Hasbro Franchise Games – Building For the Players
While these games may take on any form, I am excited to see a concentration on game formats like RPG and deck-building games. With these two formats games can be expanded, but players do not have to shell out hundreds of dollars chasing ultra-rare cards that break the game. This also allows for games to bounce back and forth between competitive and cooperative set ups. Transformers recently had a nice little CCG card game going, but it folded earlier this year. These franchises cover a large group and need to be represented in the gaming world.
Casey Collins from Hasbro said this about the team up with Renegade Games:
“We’re thrilled to expand our relationship with Renegade Game Studios to include more fan favorite brands from our portfolio. The tabletop and roleplaying games Renegade Game Studios innovated for the Power Rangers franchise have proved to authentically connect with both gamers and the Ranger Nation and we are confident that G.I. Joe, Transformers and My Little Pony fans will love the exciting games coming soon.”
Casey Collins, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Global Consumer Products at Hasbro
It truly is a double edged sword. Not only do we need Renegade Studios to make great games, but we need fans and gamers to buy and use the games. Some of the greatest games saw early ends because they could not find the right audiences.
