While there’s no such thing as the definitive “best” Doctor, Whovians all have their preference. And admittedly, a few tend to rise to the top as fan favorites. So it’s not all that surprising to hear a recent poll places David Tennant’s Doctor as #1.
The Radio Times poll pitted the 13 actors to play the Doctor in TV and film against each other. Nearly 50,000 fans cast their votes for their favorite.
While Tennant took the top spot, it was a tight race. Ultimately, Tennant came in at just over 100 votes more than current Doctor Jodie Whittaker. Tennant and Whittaker each claimed 21% of the vote, followed by Peter Capaldi’s Twelfth Doctor in third with 18%.

Tom Baker’s Fourth Doctor continues to be a fan favorite decades after his TV run. And some fans continue to prove the first appearance of the character will always remain special; William Hartnell nabs a respectable #6 in the poll.
Despite only appearing in Doctor Who: The Movie, Paul McGann’s Eighth Doctor manages to place #7. His popularity may be attributed to his ongoing audio adventures with Big Finish.
Personally, my favorite Doctor is Capaldi. I don’t think he gets nearly the attention he deserves. So, I’m pleasantly surprised to see him taking the #3 spot.
