Story Synopsis: Avengers: The Children’s Crusade
The Young Avengers are no longer rookies and the rumors of Wiccan and Speed’s supposed mother are too much to ignore. Can they find their mother, Scarlet Witch, before she is arrested for mutant genocide in this week’s Comic Rewind, Avengers: The Children’s Crusade.
The Young Avengers were fighting some terrorist group, but when one tried to set off a nuke Wiccan stepped in. He cast a spell which put all the terrorists in a coma. The Avengers were taken aback by his power and scared by it.
A few years back Scarlet Witch’s twin sons were killed and their souls taken to Hell. Scarlet Witch lost control of her powers and killed some Avengers. However, the really scary part is she depowered millions of mutants with three simple words, “no more mutants.” She also created a new reality ruled by her and her family. This event became known as House of M and made Scarlet Witch a wanted criminal.
Wiccan and Speed were rumored to be Scarlet Witch and Vision’s sons’ souls in new bodies. This display of raw power didn’t help to silence these rumors. The Avengers wanted to keep an eye on Wiccan and see just how powerful Wiccan was.
Magneto Is Never A Calming Presence
The tension between the Avengers and the Young Avengers rose up as the Young Avengers didn’t want to give Wiccan over. However, Wiccan’s possible grandfather came to smooth everything over, oh wait no that is Magneto and he made much worse. Magneto needed the Young Avengers help to find his daughter, Scarlet Witch. The journey took the team to Latveria and Doctor Doom as well as the wrong side of both the Avengers and the X-Men.
Avengers: The Children’s Crusade was written by Allan Heinberg with art by Jim Cheung. Marvel Comics published the volume in 2012.
More Young Avengers Please
I just couldn’t resist more Young Avengers. When I read this years ago I remember really liking it, but wow this is so good and has so many twists and turns.
This is so good that I want to read more Avengers, more X-Men and more Marvel teams stuff in general. The story is so good and has a huge impact on the Marvel universe. I don’t understand why the Young Avengers are not talked about more. This story wraps up the fallout from House of M and that is mentioned a lot, but not the Young Avengers?
Who Can The Young Avengers Trust Magneto or Doctor Doom?
The Magneto stuff was interesting as it is unclear if he can be trusted mostly because Quicksilver says he can’t. It was cool seeing Quicksilver because I hardly ever see him in comics. Magneto is a big and scary bad guy to be putting so much trust in. However, shortly after Doctor Doom shows up and claims he is acting in Scarlet Witch’s best interests. Maybe Magneto can be trusted, but can Doctor Doom?
This is a good introduction to Scarlet Witch and just how scary powerful she is. Everyone is scared of her and her powers even Magneto and Doctor Doom. Wolverine wants her dead and the Avengers and X-Men both want to put her in their own personal prison. The Young Avengers are caught in the middle just trying to not die in the crossfire.
It’s Just Plain Better
As much as I liked the first two volumes of Young Avengers that I reviewed last time this is just plain better. The characters are more flushed out especially Wiccan, the action is more intense, everything has such high stakes and the Young Avengers know how to work together now. They are so good that they can go toe-to-toe with the Avengers, X-Men and Doctor Doom sometimes at the same time.
If you want more Young Avengers,Scarlet Witch or Wiccan then this is a must read. It is a must read from beginning to end. The best part is I don’t think you need to have read any previous Young Avengers to enjoy this comic, but it will make it more enjoyable.
