It’s a great time to be a Star Trek fan. We got Discovery in 2017. Star Trek: Picard came in 2019. Now have the newest Star Trek show on the way. Star Trek: Lower Decks is the newest animated Star Trek show to land on CBS All Access. Star Trek fans have anxiously been awaiting what this show would bring to the Star Trek Universe. The verdict is in, and it’s not half bad.
Star Trek: Lower Decks And The Ensigns
First off, I will make it 100% clear, I did not watch the animated series from the 70’s. Lower Decks follows the lives of four Ensigns. Ensign Mariner voiced by Tawny Newsome, Ensign Boimler voiced by Jack Quaid, Ensign Tendi voiced by Noël Wells. Finally, it follows Ensign Rutherford voiced by Eugene Cordero.
We get introduced to these ensigns who are different in their own way. Ensign Boimler hopes for greatness. While his counterpart Ensign Mariner doesn’t really care and gives off that Tom Paris attitude of getting by and having fun. These ensigns are stationed in the USS Cerritos which are what are led to believe is one of the lowest class ships in the StarFleet.
The First Episode
Commander Ransom, voiced by Jerry O’Connell, get infected by a bug on an away mission. He brings it back to the Cerritos to infect the entire crew. While on a mission to the planet Boimler gets attacked by a huge galactic spider. The spider wants to envelope Boimler’s moisture and he gets covered in slime. The slime ends up being the antidote for the “zombies” on the Cerritos.
Boiler accidentally ends up saving the crew and we find out the Ensign Mariner is actually the daughter of Captain Freeman. The show closed with Mariner declaring that Boimler will be her “Cha’Dich” from now on. A “Cha’Dich” is someone who fights for someone else. The show closes with Mariner naming famous Star Trek characters:
Do you know about Spock? Dude came back from being dead? Got the Genesis device to fight Khan and some space whales. Sulu, he rocked a sword. That was his thing. That could be your thing, too. We’re due for a new sword guy. Do you know about Kirk? My man Worf?…Gary Mitchell? Do you know Deanna Troi, She went from a jumpsuit…
It’s a strong start. The show is funny. I loved the Easter eggs throughout the show. I’m looking forward to what this show will bring this season! So, what do you think of Star Trek: Lower Decks?
