New Mutants confirmed during its San Diego Comic-Con panel the film would release August 28.
Director Josh Boone also released the first three minutes of the movie during the panel. You can watch the panel, including the opening sequence below. (Jump to the 24 minute mark to get to the exclusive clip first.)
The New Mutants opening certainly shows the film will bring the action right from the start. It shows Danielle Moonstar (Blu Hunt) being dragged out of bed by a man (presumably her father) and away from their burning house. They run outside into a snowstorm. People are running around, buildings are on fire, cars are crashing. They dart into the woods for safety. Some unknown monster kills the man and knocks out Danielle, who wakes up handcuffed to a hospital bed.
(And all that’s really only in two minutes, since the first minute of the clip was taken up by the Twentieth Century Fox and Marvel intros.)
You can learn more about New Mutants from the cast themselves. Watch the panel featuring Maisie Williams, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Heaton, Alice Braga, Blu Hunt, and Henry Zaga.
Another New Mutants poster
In addition to the preview clip, New Mutants dropped some new art. It comes from graphic artist Bill Sienkiewicz, who illustrated the first New Mutants graphic novels in 1984.
Theatrical release?
Despite what seems like every major Hollywood film dropping or delaying upcoming theatrical releases, New Mutants says it is moving forward with its theatrical release.
Even before COVID-19 forced production and theater shutdowns, New Mutants struggled to maintain a release date. (As the opening sequence of the Comic-Con panel reminds us.) Currently, the studio says the film will still hit theaters August 28.
