HBO announced the upcoming horror series ‘Lovecraft Country’ premieres August 16.

Based on the 2016 novel by Matt Ruff, the one-hour drama follows Atticus Black (Jonathan Majors) on his journey to find his missing father. Atticus, his Uncle George, and his friend Letitia embark on a road trip across 1950’s Jim Crow America. What follows is a struggle to survive and overcome both racist terrors of white America and terrifying monsters that could be ripped from an H.P. Lovecraft paperback.

The show comes from executive producers Jordan Peele (Get Out) and J.J. Abrams (Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker) and showrunner Misha Green (Underground).

What Else Do We Know About Lovecraft Country?

Like any good horror series, specific details about the plot of Lovecraft Country are being kept under wraps. However, we do know more about the characters.

Atticus Black (Jonathan Majors of The Last Black Man in San Francisco) is a Korean War veteran. He wears his heart on his sleeve despite the daily injustices all around him. Because he’s always got a pulp novel in his pocket, he’s been known to butt heads with his stern and realistic father Montrose (Michael Kenneth Williams of The Wire).

Atticus’ Uncle George (Courtney B. Vance of American Crime Story) has always been more like a father to him. As the publisher of the “Safe Negro Travel Guide,” he’s been on enough adventures to understand there’s no place like home. He was the first to introduce Atticus to pulp novels.

Letitia “Leti” Lewis (Jurnee Smollett of Birds of Prey) hustled her way across the country as an artist protesting for civil rights and now finds herself back home to plant some roots. Her half-sister Ruby (Wunmi Mosaku) is also a hustler, but her hustles haven’t paid off. Her family ties are tested when she’s presented with an offer she can’t refuse.

More Characters From Lovecraft Country

Hippolyta Freeman (Aunjanue Ellis) has been a housewife most of her life but dreams of getting into some adventures of her own. Her itch for adventure will eventually take her to the stars and beyond – literally and figuratively.

Eustice Hunt (Jamie Harris) is a county sheriff with a NAACP complaint file a mile long. He gets more than he bargained for when he crosses paths with Atticus.

Ji-Ah (Jamie Chung) is a seemingly naive nursing student who is thrust into active service when war breaks out. A rash of soldier disappearances suggests she is more than what she seems…

Christina Braithwhite (Abbey Lee) is the only daughter of the leader of a secret order calling themselves the “Sons of Adam.” She’s gone to great lengths to earn her father’s respect, but to no avail. She’s going to pave her own path to power, and use Atticus and his family to do it. Willam (Jordan Patrick Smith) is Christina’s henchman, lover, bodyguard, spy, or whatever else she may need him to be. Blonde-haired, blue-eyed, he’s the “perfect specimen” for the Aryan race.

Lovecraft Country will premiere on HBO Sunday, August 16 at 9pm. The series will also be available to stream on HBO Max.
