Resident Evil is getting a brand-new movie from Sony in 2026. Zach Cregger is teaming with the studio for a new take on the popular video game franchise. Warner Bros. contemplated entering the fray. Deadline reports that Sony wanted Resident Evil to stay at home with them. September 18, 2026 is the slated release date for Resident Evil.
Cregger told Deadline, “I’ve been a rabid fan of these games for decades, and to be able to bring this amazing title to life is a true honor.” While Sony won’t let anyone in on the big secret script for Resident Evil, Deadline says that things are headed back to the series’ orgins. That tactic has worked out swimmingly for the game franchise. Most of the recent remakes have sold like gangbusters in recent years.
Constantin producer Robert Kulzer added, “The world of Resident Evil experienced through Zach’s vision is an irresistible feat.” Whatever Sony and the production team have planned, fans show up for Horror projects. Add in a recognizable brand like this one and it’s a recipe for something very interesting.
Zach Cregger Directing Resident Evil Movie
Resident Evil is a pretty big priority for Sony Pictures. After all, the PlayStation-affiliated franchise has raked-in $1.2 billion worldwide. It’s easily on the short list of name recognition for video game adaptations. Paul W.S. Anderson left his stamp on this universe and they’re hoping that Cregger will do the same.
Sanford Panitch, president of Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group said in a release: “Zach is one of the most talented exciting new directors to come on the scene in many years. His brilliant approach in restarting and refreshing this legendary Sony franchise instantly makes this one of our most important releases in 2026.”
