David Arquette is officially joining Scream 7. Yes, you read that right. That makes three characters now supposedly returning from the dead for the sequel. Deadline was first with the news that Arquette was joining Scott Foley and Matthew Lillard for the seventh film in the long-running slasher franchise. The three actors have played characters that have all died at some point in the Scream franchise, but any information about how or why is under wraps currently.

David Arquette played Deputy Dewey Riley for five of the Scream films, 1-5 but met his untimely demise saving the new group of characters in Scream 2022. He first appeared in Scream (1996) and grew into a massive fan-favorite. His character and David Arquette was married to Courteney Cox (and Gale Weathers). Arquette joins the previously announced legacy cast members Neve Campbell, Mason Gooding, and Jasmin Savoy Brown alongside the new group of Isabely May, Celeste O’Connor, Asa Germann, McKenna Grace, Sam Rechner, Anna Camp, Joel McHale, Mark Consuelos, and Ethan Embry.

Kevin Williamson is back to direct the film with a script from Guy Busick. The original run of the series was Scream to Scream 3. Then we got Scream 4 in 2011, which was the final film in the series directed by Wes Craven. It returned in 2022 with Scream and the most recent film was Scream VI. That film came out in March 2023 and holds the franchise record for highest domestic box office gross with more than $108 million. The next film could push the franchise over $1 billion at the worldwide box office.

What Has David Arquette Been Up To?

Since Scream (2022), Arquette has starred in projects like the video game The Quarry, the series Mrs. Davis, and the film The Unholy Trinity. His role as Dewey is arguably his most famous. How are they going to bring all these dead characters back? It could be some Scream magic or as simple as a flashback scene. We’ll have to see when Scream 7 releases in theaters on February 27th, 2026.

Scream 7 has seen some major turmoil behind the scenes even before it went into production. It was originally set to be directed by Christopher Landon with Radio Silence dropping out to direct Abigail and Ready Or Not 2Scream 5 and VI star Melissa Barerra was fired by Spyglass Media for her comments on the Israel-Palestine conflict. Jenna Ortega also had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts with Wednesday and other projects. The two leading ladies signaled the end of that era of the franchise. Landon dropped out as director soon after. Kevin Williamson was brought on in his stead to direct the film.
