CinemaCon is the largest meeting of theater owners and exhibitors in the world. It takes place in Las Vegas, Nevada every spring and its where movie studios show off their upcoming slates. This year, the event will be headlined by the world premiere of How To Train Your Dragon from Universal and Dreamworks. The world premiere takes place April 2nd at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace. This is more than two months ahead of the film’s release on June 13th, 2025.
This should inspire confidence from Universal in showing off the movie two months early to a crowd of theater owners, exhibitors, and journalists. Previous years saw the headlining movie screenings as Top Gun: Maverick, The Flash, and The Fall Guy.
This should help to bring more hype to the live-action remake of the classic animated films. It’ll need all it can get with a crowded summer theater season already in swing. It releases around Marvel’s Thunderbolts*, Lilo & Stitch, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, Elio, Jurassic World Rebirth, Superman, Smurfs, and Fantastic Four: First Steps.
Here’s what Jimm Orr, Universal’s President of Domestic Theatrical Distribution had to say.
“’How to Train Your Dragon’ delivers the perfect blend of blockbuster action, breathtaking visuals and emotional storytelling that defines the ultimate theatrical experience. We’re thrilled to share this film with our exhibition partners first, as they will be instrumental in bringing this extraordinary adventure to audiences worldwide this summer.”
Here’s what Mitch Neuhauser, Managing Director of CinemaCon had to say:
“We are thrilled that Universal Pictures has chosen to showcase this summer blockbuster for the global exhibition community. This movie promises to be a hit with movie fans of all ages all around the world. Seeing it in your local theatre will be an amazing experience, and the global exhibition community is excited to help promote it in the days ahead.”
The remake is written and directed by Dean DeBlois, who directed the animated trilogy of Dragon films for Universal. It stars Mason Thames and Gerard Butler.
CinemaCon runs from March 31st to April 3rd, 2025.
